Screening & Self-testing

Postpartum Support International (PSI) recommends universal screening for all new mothers, using an evidence-based tool such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Screen (EPDS) or Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9).

Both the EPDS and the PHQ-9 can be used as a self-test for depression during and after pregnancy for free. The benefits are that they are self-administered, translated into many languages, and easy to complete.

*Print out the results of your test(s) and take it to your healthcare provider. The recommended cut-off score for a positive screen using either tool is 10.

We recommend you use these screening tools to facilitate a conversation with your healthcare provider.
